LINUX FILE SYSTEMS

FILE  SYSTEM

Dont panic its as easy as drinking water !!

File systems are one of the things any newcomer to linux must become acquainted with. In windows you didn't have to worry about file system. The default was NTFS. However in linux it is not limited in this way.

File system means some definite systems for arranging files contained by hard disk. For understanding easily one can compare file system in hard disk as DEWEY decimal system in library. At library many other systems are used to sort the books other than DEWEY system.  This is also true for file systems in hard disk. For windows the systems are FAT or NTFS but at linux the systems are many. Such as- ext, ext2, ext3, ext4, JFS, XFS etc. FAT & NTFS are also used in linux.

MINIX--It can be said that MINIX file system from MINIX operating system was intended  to use at  Linux OS. But the problem was that - its maximum partition size was only 64 MB and it could not write file name if it exceeds 14 characters.

EXT/EXT2/EXT3/EXT 4--  To solve the MINIX file problem an extended  file system was invented. It was called EXT. It supported file naming by upto 255 characters. But it has problem too. So 2nd extended file system was invented. It supports file size upto 2 TB and partition size up  to 32 TB. After that 3rd and 4th extended file sytem was created. EXT3 with maximum file size of 2TB and maximum partition size of 32 TB. And EXT4 file system is with maximum file size of 16TB and maximum partition size of 1EiB.
